Motherhood

Wash over me
oh life that is full to the brim,
yet as ordinary as bread and butter,
inspiration from another day
of stooping and walking around in circles,
rubbing the same spot clean.

"New broom, sweeps clean,"
grandma said
and I believe her,
but my broom is old
and leaves pieces of my life
spread across the linoleum.

"A woman can shovel out the back door
what a man brings home in a spoon,"
grandma said,
but I don't believe her because
that spoon, that spoon was my child's shovel
and was lost in the yard long before
it ever got to me.
